Description:
Abstract: This geographic information system (GIS) data set shows the extent of surficial geologic materials in New Jersey. Surficial materials are the unconsolidated glacial, river, wetland, windblown, marine, estuarine, and hillslope sediments and weathered rock materials that overlie bedrock and Coastal Plain formations and that are the parent material for agronomic soils.
Purpose: To depict the extent of surficial geologic materials across the State of New Jersey. It contains information for assessing and protecting aquifers, assessing water quality, and providing a framework for evaluating hazards and resources. It was prepared in cooperation with the U. S. Geological Survey (USGS) National Geologic Mapping Program.

Authors Notes: Enlargement of the data to more detailed scales than specified could result in registration errors. Attribute Accuracy Report: Attribute accuracy is tested by manually comparing hard copy plots of the digital data with the source materials. When attributes can not be visually verified on plots they are interactively queried and verified on the screen.
Logical Consistency Report: The software ArcGIS 9.x checks for topology consistency and ensures that there are no duplicate lines, overshoots or undershoots.
Completeness Report: Exhaustive checks completed on all data layers. Internal review by author and compiler, Survey management, and Survey Editorial staff.

Horizontal Positional Accuracy Report: Four registration tics on each of the 1:100,000 scale data sets were utilized to register and transform the data from board-inches to state plane coordinate feet. A root-mean-square (RMS) error of 0.005 was required (approximately 41.67 feet at 1:100,000 scale). New and revised line work was digitized into the data sets with an RMS of 0.005. Proof plots were made for each data set on stable-base media and compared to the original data. Line work that deviated from the original position by more than 0.02 inch were re-digitized, re-plotted and corrected until acceptable results were obtained

Process Description: 
The USGS created the layouts for the Miscellaneous Investigations Series maps using Adobe Illustrator. The three layouts containing surficial polygons and registration tics were modified extensively and the exported utilizing Avenza's MAPublisher software. The resulting ESRI shapefiles of northern, central and southern New Jersey were then converted to ESRI coverage file format. The coverage files were then transformed into files utilizing the North American Datum of 1983, New Jersey State Plane coordinate feet. A root-mean-square error of 0.005 was obtained for each file. A digitizing tablet was used to correct errors and to add new and revised data (polygons) to the files. An RMS of 0.005 was maintained. Attribution of the polygons was performed interactively after digitizing was completed. The coverages were then edge-matched and joined together. The coverages were then converted to ESRI's shapefile format.
