Geological Survey Report GSR 25 "Inventory of Active and Abandoned Sand and Gravel Mining Operations in New Jersey" 1991 and the New Jersey Department of Labor, Office of Mine Safety & Compliance list of mine registrations for 2006 were used as the basis for this digital product. The process began by developing a Microsoft Access database and importing the information from GSR 25 and the New Jersey Department of Labor, Office of Mine Safety & Compliance report on all registered mining operations in New Jersey into the database. Additional information on the surface mining operations was gathered by mailing a questionnaire to the active mining operations. The locations from GSR 25 were checked using aerial photography. The locations for the majority of the registered mining operations were collected with the global positioning system. If the mining operation could not be found with a site visit it was verified using aerial photography. The GPS locations collected were obtained at the front entrance of the mining operations and in some instances the weigh scales. A dBASE table was exported from the Microsoft Access database. The dBASE table was then imported into ArcMap v. 8.3 and converted to a shapefile. For this shapefile update dated 20061212, new quarry sites were added to the shapefile based on the New Jersey Department of Labor, Office of Mine Safety & Compliance list of mine registrations for 2006-2007.
The database contains a unique ID, certificate numbers, mine name, geologic formation, products mined, references, details if available, comments, county, town, address, coordinates in northing and easting, GPS location if available, registration, latitude, longitude, pit, quarry and subsurface.
