Description:
Abstract: The Geographic Information System (GIS) point layer, Abandoned Mines of New Jersey contains locations and attributes for abandoned mines. The shapefile has locations for nine types of abandoned mines which are Copper, Graphite, Iron, Lead, Mica, Manganese, Sulfide, Uranium and Zinc. There are 588 abandoned mine locations in the database and they are mapped at a scale of 1:24,000. This updated version of the data has undergone significant changes in two USGS quadrangles since the previous version of this data, dated July 29, 2005, was published. Previously, Bloomsbury, Blairstown, Easton, and High Bridge USGS quadrangles were updated. In this update, field work by geologists was conducted to improve the locational information of the mines in the Franklin and Riegelsville USGS quadrangles. Some of the mines in these quadrangles were located using the global positioning system (GPS). Certain mines in these quadrangles were mapped for the first time and appear in this data but not in the previous version of the data. Some known mine locations in the previous version of the data have been more accurately mapped and the points have been relocated.
Purpose: To provide locations and information on abandoned mines in New Jersey.
Supplemental Information: The points in the data represent both specific and general locations of the mines and their workings. Some of the mines have workings more extensive than depicted by the point in the data, such as numerous openings, air shafts, entrances, workings etc., that extend farther out than where the point location is shown in the data. Also, some of the mines have been covered over and are not visible from the surface. For the most current information on the conditions of the abandoned iron mines see the reports from the New Jersey Department of Labor, Office of Mine Safety and Compliance. The reports are numbered 16-24 in the references section and provide information on the general condition and safety of the iron mines. Please note some of the mines in this data may not be listed in the mine safety reports. Note: This shapefile is combined with an ArcView Legend file called mines.avl.

Process Description:
The additional mines added and the mines which were repositioned in this version of the data were done after being located by investigating two USGS 7.5 minute quadrangles (Franklin and Riegelsville) on the ground by a geologist. The newly discovered and revised mine locations totaled 44 and were located using the global positioning system (GPS) and put into a database. The coordinates were recorded in Latitude Longitude with the GPS receiver. They were then converted to New Jersey State Plane Feet NAD83 northing and easting and exported as a dBASE file. This dBASE file was appended with the previous abandoned mines shapefile dated July 29, 2005. Any mine location which existed in the previous mines shapefile that had been relocated were deleted from this shapefile before the append so any duplication of mines was avoided.
