Description:
Abstract: This Web Map Service (WMS) layer serves a seamless copy of monochromatic topographic base map (1:24,000 scale) raster graphic images. Data in the WMS were derived from 7.5 minute images published by the NJ Geological Survey in NAD83 NJ State Plane feet coordinates. NJGS derived those images from Digital Raster Graphic files of 7.5 minute quadrangles, published by the US Geological Survey. Source images are 12-color, 250 DPI. Source map dates are 1954 - 1994.
Purpose: The WMS was created for easy, service-based access to large-scale monochromatic topographic map data.
Supplemental Information: The WMS can be used by any GIS client program that can consume OGC-compliant services.

Completeness Report: The WMS covers the entire land area of the state of New Jersey, plus some State water areas. The quadrangle tiles do not all meet perfectly so there are no-data areas at some boundaries.

Horizontal Positional Accuracy Report: Creator of the NJGS product states that the product meets National Map Accuracy Standards for 1:24,000 scale maps (not more than 10% of the points tested shall be in error more than 40 feet.) However, testing appears to have used only 7.5 minute ticks.The WMS resamples the imagery, so positional accuracy for the service is slightly different from that for the individual images.

USGS Digital Raster Graphic files of 7.5 minute topographic quadrangle maps were obtained on CD. The color images were converted to monochromatic bit map by resetting the thirteen color index values in the image color map. Collar information was clipped. Ordering Instructions: This OGC-compliant WMS is compatible with a broad range of client software (See http://thecarbonproject.azurewebsites.net/Products/Gaia for one example of a free client). Use the network resource address to connect to the service. You will have to drill down to get to the single data layer.ArcGIS-Specific Instructions:-Launch ArcCatalog or open the ArcMap Catalog window.-Open "GIS Servers" in the catalog tree and double-click "Add WMS Server". -In the URL field, fill in the network resource URL. Click the "Get Layers" button to confirm you have the correct URL. Click "ok".-Preview the service or open the server connection and drag the service into the map. You may have to drill down to the imagery layer, depending on what version of the software you are using.-If you already have other layers in the map, the web map service will be projected to match them. If not, it will default to longitude/latitude, and you should change the projection. Right-click on the layer name and choose "change coordinate system". NJ State Plane is recommended. -You may get a warning message about the coordinate transformation; dismiss it. The errors described in that warning will not actually occur if you are using NJ State Plane coordinates. That coordinate system is supported directly in the web map service, so ArcMap does not wind up doing the coordinate transformation.
