Description:

Abstract: The Bedrock Geology of New Jersey consists of statewide and countywide data layers (contacts, folds, dikes). The data are provided in two spatial data formats: ESRI's ARC/INFO Geographic Information Systems (GIS) export and Autodesk's AutoCad DXF. The GIS data were scanned and digitized from United States Geological Survey Miscellaneous Investigations and Open-File Series 1:100,000 scale geologic maps compiled from 1984 to 1993.
Purpose: This GIS data set depicts the section lines for the corresponding cross sections. It was prepared in cooperation with the U. S. Geological Survey (USGS) National Geologic Mapping Program.
Supplemental Information: Digital compilation of cross the section lines by Ronald S. Pristas. Authors Notes: Enlargement of the data to more detailed scales than specified could result in registration errors. If information is needed at more detailed scales, please contact the New Jersey Geological Survey to determine the status of detailed mapping.

Attribute Accuracy Report: Attribute accuracy is tested by manually comparing hard copy plots of the digital data with the source materials. When attributes can not be visually verified on plots they are interactively queried and verified on the screen.

Logical Consistency Report: The software ArcGIS 8.x checks for topology consistency and ensures that there are no duplicate lines, overshoots or undershoots.

Completeness Report: Exhaustive checks completed on all data layers. Internal review by author and compiler, Survey management, and Survey Editorial staff.

Horizontal Positional Accuracy Report: Four registration tics on the 1:100,000 scale base map were utilized to register and transform the data from board-inches to state plane coordinate feet. A root-mean-square (RMS) error of 0.005 was required (approximately 41.67 feet at 1:100,000 scale). Proof plots were made for each data set on stable-base media and compared to the original data. Line work that deviated from the original position by more than 0.02 inch were re-digitized, re-plotted and corrected until acceptable results were obtained

Process Step:

Process Description: Stable-base manuscripts were manually digitized by New Jersey Geological Survey. The registration marks correspond to known coordinates on the base maps (NAD83, New Jersey state plane coordinate feet). An empty coverage was generated by manually inputting the known coordinates as the registration marks (tics). Each tic was also assign a unique identification number. The coverage with the section lines and registration marks was then edited. The tics automatically created for this coverage were moved so they exactly overlayed the registration marks. The tics were assigned the same unique identification numbers as in the empty coverage. The section lines and registration marks coverage was then transformed into the empty coverage. The section lines and registration marks are now in NAD83, New Jersey state plane coordinate feet. The transformation had an RMS error of 0.005. The coverages were checked against the original maps. The coverages were joined together and converted to ESRI's shapefile format.
