Abstract: Archaeological Sites are locations of prehistoric or historic occupation or activity possessing archaeological value. This dataset includes a vector grid of approximately 1/2 mile cells indicating the presence of Archaeological Districts or Sites that: 1. Are National Historic Landmarks, 2. Are included in the New Jersey or National Registers of Historic Places, 3. Have been determined Eligible for inclusion in the registers through federal or state processes administered by the HPO, 4. Have been designated as Local Landmarks or Districts by local government, or 5. Have been identified through early 20th century state-wide archaeological survey, modern cultural resource survey, or other documentation on file at the HPO. The majority of features in the dataset represent categories 1, 2, and 3 above. HPO is still in the process of comprehensive digitizing for categories 4 and 5. This dataset is limited to the resources on-file at the HPO and does not include the comprehensive catalog of archaeological sites on file at the New Jersey State Museum or the New Jersey Pinelands Commission. Inclusion in this dataset does not preclude the existence of other archaeological districts or sites as yet unidentified, unrecorded, or undocumented.
Purpose: This data is produced and maintained by the HPO to provide accurate cultural resource information to government, regulated customers, and the public.
Supplemental Information: The HPO has defined the following layers to represent cultural resources in GIS applications: Historic District Polygons, Historic Property Polygons, Archaeological Site Grid, and Cultural Resource Report Study Area Polygons These layers are developed maintained by the HPO, and are provided for informational purposes only. INSPECTION OF THESE DATA LAYERS DOES NOT CONSTITUTE IDENTIFICATION LEVEL CULTURAL RESOURCES SURVEY UNDER SECTION 106 OF THE NATIONAL HISTORIC PRESERVATION ACT OR OTHER LAW OR REGULATION. NOR DOES IT CONSTITUTE PROJECT REVIEW OR COMPLIANCE UNDER ANY STATE OF FEDERAL LAW.
Access Constraints: Inquire at NJ Historic Preservation Office (HPO); Tel. 609-984-0176. In most cases, a downloadable shapefile (.zip) version of this layer is also available. Information to download the shapefile can be found in the Distribution Section of this metadata record. This data layer is shown in the NJDEP's NJ-GeoWeb mapping application accessible through the Online Linkage: http://www.nj.gov/dep/gis/geowebsplash.htm

Completeness Report: This data set includes data for all 21 counties in NJ. This dataset is not exclusionary; Other archaeological sites may exist which are as yet unidentified, unrecorded, or undocumented. Positional Accuracy:
Horizontal Positional Accuracy:
Horizontal Positional Accuracy Report: This data set should not be relied on for consistent horizontal positional accuracy. Because of its method of development accuracy of the locations varies considerably. The highest quality data have approximately the same accuracy as the New Jersey High Resolution Orthophotos. The lowest quality data may vary from their base map location by 100's of feet.
Positional Accuracy:
Vertical Positional Accuracy:
Vertical Positional Accuracy Report: No vertical positions are included in this data set.
